Education & Experience
I graduated from the University of Victoria’s Law Co-op programme in 1996 and spent just under 5 years in private practice as a lawyer once I completed articling. At that point, I decided to transition into financial planning and successfully completed my Certified Financial Planning (CFP) designation and accepted a position in Sun Life’s Estate and Financial Planning Services Department for the ensuing 7 years, working my way up to the role as a Director of Financial Planning.
While at Sun Life, I also acquired my CLU (Certified Life Underwriter), which traditionally requires a couple years to complete, and my FMA (Financial Management Advisor) designations, which is the culmination of taking several courses through the Canadian Securities Institute.
My primary responsibilities at Sun Life was working with high net worth clients throughout British Columbia, assisting Sun Life advisors and their clients with a vast range of financial planning topics and providing ongoing professional development to both small and large groups. When working with clients, I provided a detailed analysis of their financial situation and comprehensive recommendations on ways to reduce current and future tax bills, increase the chances of achieving their financial dreams and minimize the impact of life events that might otherwise derail their plans.
Finally, I also was in charge of researching, writing and editing financial planning articles for Sun Life’s Estate and Financial Planning Department Canada-wide and represented it at the prestigious CALU (Conference for Advanced Life Underwriters) in Ottawa.
